Road Trips In U.S.A.
Sharath and I are big fans of Road trips. We have been fortunate enough to go on many Road Trips in U.S.A. Till now we have driven to destinations about 15 hours away from our starting point, usually splitting them over 2 days. That’s approximately about 7.5 hours of driving per day. We have also driven 12 hours at a stretch in a day too, phew, that was tiring!
Some quick Tips to know before you start Long Road Trips in U.S.A.
You must like driving. Roads in the U.S. are good, however sometimes you might find that they can stretch a loooong way before you find anything on either side of the freeway (highway). Prepare to have some caffeine or people to talk to! Sharath and I love driving and we always split the journey between us. We chat a lot, so it is definitely not boring. Although, I am guilty of falling asleep when he drives, sometimes!
Lightweight Traveling. We are extremely lightweight travellers, with this motto – less to carry, less the hassle. Lightweight traveling helps you drive long distances comfortably without too much junk in your car.
Plan for food and water. We always carry plenty of healthy snacks and gallons of water. Not the plastic water bottles, but huge gallons of water jugs with reusable steel water bottles.
Plan your stay and your whole trip. This will save time and go easy on the stress of travel if you know where you are staying and what your next stop is.
Take good breaks. Previously, we never paid much attention to taking good breaks and drove as much as we could, often upto 5 hours at a stretch. Recently we switched to a Tesla. We stop every 2.5-3 hours for a quick charge and it is a blessing in disguise! We are not at all exhausted once we finish our 12 hour journey and we can actually enjoy the trip! If you are thinking about the time added to the trip due to stops, it’s negligible! It hardly added 20 minutes to our 12 hour journey. It was worth taking those breaks at the end.
Well, that’s about some of the most important tips to remember! Pin it below for future reference!
