Hawai’i had always been on my bucket list. Little did I know that just 1 trip isn’t going to be enough to cover the many beautiful islands it has to offer. Hawai’i is a North American state located in the pacific ocean about 2100 miles of southwest from mainland U.S.A. Hawai’i is primarily made up of islands with 4 commonly well known islands, namely, Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and O’ahu.

Which Island to visit in Hawai’i?

This was the first question that popped in our heads when we were planning our trip. All the islands have something different and unique to offer so it depends on what you want to do on your vacation. The following summary based on our experience and research should give you a fair idea of what the islands have to offer.

BIG ISLAND (ISLAND OF HAWAI'I)

Big Island (Island of Hawai’i)  – This was the first island we chose. Big Island of Hawai’i, in our experience, is not so commercialized in most of the parts. It is brimming with nature not yet harmed by human encroachment. Water activities are in abundant, run mostly by locals offers a more personalized experience than a big tour. The city life is minimal with less touristy spots taken over by huge companies, giving more room to explore the island on your own. We personally loved this island and would definitely visit again! MAUI

Maui  was the second Island we chose. Sharath had already been here once and had piqued my interest quite a bit about visiting this island. Maui is very well known and inevitably more touristy. You options ranging from a five-star all inclusive resort to local cute airbnb’s. We, of course, chose a local airbnb to experience the island in its true form. Maui is filled with amazing white sand beaches, waterfalls and good amount of water activities. You will see a lot more people here than on Big Island. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit!

KAUAI

Kauai  has been on our list forever now. The reason we didn’t choose this in the beginning is because we did not have time to research. Also, since Sharath had already been to Maui, he wanted to visit that island together and Big Island had a volcano that had erupted, so couldn’t miss that! Kauai, is known as the Garden island. True to its nickname, most of the island is covered in a tropical rainforest. The island offers a dramatic view of raw nature filled with hikes. The scenic places are less accessible than the other islands, meaning you gotta work to experience it. This is definitely next on our list! Being an outdoor person, the idea of getting lost amidst nature with hikes, less people and more beaches, is far more tempting than anything else.

O'AHU

O’ahu is one of the oldest Hawai’ian islands and hence a well developed one. It has more to offer in terms of historical significance such as the Pearl Harbor and Lolani Palace. It is also famous for its nightlife and world class shopping centers. Apart from the city life, it also has beautiful beaches and hikes that you can explore. If you like to enjoy local Hawai’ian culture with the comforts of a city life, then O’ahu has a perfect blend.

All Islands of Hawai’i are synonymous with beautiful beaches, tropical forests, cliffs and great weather. We have visited both Big Island and Maui. We hope to visit all of them in the near future!
